Dave's Biography
“I wrote the ‘Stolen Identity’ track when I found out that someone down in Costa Rica was trying to pass himself off as me,” says Dave Flett. “On hearing this, I had to do something to set the record straight”.
Everything is good for something. Dave’s ‘Stolen Identity’ song proved to be the genesis of a new album. Dave felt serious concerns that music fans might be subjected to confusion. So he wrote the ‘Stolen Identity’ track to address those concerns. He worked with some articulate, talented Florida guys to write 10 additional tracks.
Once the songs were written, Dave proceeded to record the music, resulting in his album, ‘Flying Blind’.
Guest artists must be acknowledged and thanked profusely. A major contribution came from Tony Manna – not just for vocals and keyboard, but also for his massive production / engineering contribution to the entire album. Apart from music icon Manfred Mann on keyboard, other skilled musicians playing on the record include John Lingwood on drums, Eric van Lugo on additional vocals, Louie Vigilante on bass guitar and Charlie de Chant on sax.
Dave is from Aberdeen in Scotland. He moved to London in the mid ‘70s to develop his musical career. Fans know that he was soon invited to join Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and played with them around the world for years. (Dave’s guitar solo on the MMEB’s ‘Blinded By The Light’ track has been listed by ‘Guitar Magazine’ as number 12 in their list of the “25 Greatest Wah Solos Of All Time”.) Although Dave eventually left the Earth Band, he remains on good terms with Manfred Mann, who plays keyboard as a guest artist on the new album’s eponymous ‘Flying Blind’ track. After the Earth Band years, Dave played with Thin Lizzy, including a highly-lauded tour of Japan, before moving on to pursue his own musical projects.
In 1987, Dave took a total and radical change of direction. Setting music aside, he moved to the USA and qualified as an addictions counselor. Although fulfilled in his counseling work for many years, the recent theft of his identity made Dave think about his musical past. He didn’t want his reputation to be tarnished by an imposter. The ‘Flying Blind’ album is the fortuitous result.
In order for his album to reach the music-listening public, Dave contacted an old friend, David Main, a media lawyer with many years of international music business experience. David now manages the commercial side of the production for Dave - including all contracts, sales, marketing and music publishing for ‘Flying Blind’.
The intriguing cover for the album was designed by Sally Novak, a highly-talented, Brooklyn-based artist, whose other works can be viewed at: www.sallynovak.org
